The
artists here have remarkably similar styles, especially when one considers
the wide disparity in both their life history and their artistic development.
Nevertheless, it is possible to discern which elements each contributed
to this work. Mackey's areas are simultaneously disciplined and expressive.
The emotional impact of each line is clearly exactly what she intended
it to be. Mehlman's parts of this work admittedly add balance and
contribute to the overall effect, but when seen in such close juxtaposition
his work is almost childlike compared to Mackey's precision.
The photograph below shows the artists at work in Mehlman's Richmond,
California studio.
